In the Ariel episode of Firefly today, Jayne’s selfishness was truer than ever. Inara had to have a physical examination on one of the central planets and the crew had no job to do. The crew was going to stay on the ship until they found work and the doctor gave them some work. The doctor came up with a brilliant plan to get River into the hospital for a scan of her head and for the crew to make money. The plan was to have the crew dressed as medical personnel and for the Doctor and River to be “dead” bodies. While the Doctor did scans on River’s head, Mal and Zoe went and stole some medicine that they could sell to other planets for a big profit. They decided this wasn’t wrong because it was government medicine and the stock would be refilled within days. Now is where Jayne’s selfishness comes in. He actually called the feds and told them that he has their wanted felons. He was offered a big amount of money for them and he was stupid enough to make a deal with them. The thing is, the feds backstabbed him. Instead of rewarding Jayne money, they arrest him for helping felons. So his greed ends up putting himself and the rest of the crew in danger. Luckily they are able to escape back to the ship fairly unharmed. Then when they get back to the ship the Doctor thanks Jayne for “saving” them and he just acts all noble. But he could not fool the captain. Mal knew what he did and he almost kills Jayne. Although Jayne did admit that he got greedy and was stupid that doesn’t make him noble at all. I think he just admitted he was wrong because his life depended on it.

  1. I remember watching this episode!! It was the first one that i watched actually! But i feel like Jayne has not been a very good crew member and i don't understand why Mal keeps him on the ship. Zoe is just as good of a fighter as him? And really thats the only reason he is on there, he never does anything that important. He seems to be causing more harm then good in my opinion.

  2. This episode was one of my favorites. It was interesting and exciting and I thought it really showed Jayne's selfishness. I agree, I don't know why Mal has kept him on the ship either. He doesn't really do anything important and I think he is more trouble than he is worth. However, I can see Mal keeping him for his muscle because you can never have too much of that in this series but I can see your point on how he is causing more harm than good. I just think Mal can't afford to get ride of Jayne because he needs all the muscle he can get.

  3. Yeah LeeAnn, I don't understand why Mal keeps Jayne on the ship either? Jayne really made me angry this episode because of how greedy he was. I could never imagine doing what he did to any of my "comm-rads". And Logan, I can see why you would say that Mal would keep Jayne on the ship because he's strong. Because he's muscular, I think, is the only reason why he's still on Serenity.
